Grant Thornton’s Merilyn Gwan appointed to the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board

Grant Thornton is pleased to announce Merilyn Gwan, Partner Audit & Assurance and Head of National Assurance Quality, has been appointed by the Australian Financial Reporting Council (FRC), administered by Department of the Treasury, as a member of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AUASB).

In this advisory role, Merilyn will assist in providing insights and professional guidance on the practical elements of the Australian Auditing Standards as set by the AUASB.

Merilyn Gwan said, “As part of my current role in quality and assurance at Grant Thornton, I already provide regular feedback to the AUASB from a practical auditing perspective, so it is a natural progression to become an official member of the Board.

“As the first person from Grant Thornton to be appointed to the AUASB it confirms our ongoing commitment to good governance and transparency within our audit services and across our firm. I will also leverage my expertise in quality and assurance to ensure the standards encourage best practice throughout the auditing industry as a whole and effectively measure audit quality outcomes.”

In addition to her recent appointment to the AUASB, Merilyn currently sits on the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) Reporting Committee, the Australian Public Policy Committee (APPC) Sustainability Group, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CA ANZ).

At Grant Thornton, Merilyn is Partner and head of Grant Thornton's Assurance Quality practice as well as a member of both the Grant Thornton International Audit Quality Group and the Methodology and Learning Group. She has over 25 years’ experience working in Australia as well as internationally in the UK and France focusing on assurance quality, regulatory interaction and risk management.

The appointment of members of the AUASB is governed by section 236F of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001.
